Reynard WIP I by Pagan-Inspiration Reynard WIP I by Pagan-Inspiration
The first step when I draw from a photograph (other than just random sketching). I'll print out the photo, draw a grid on the printout and then use that to transfer the image on to the grid I've drawn on the paper. This step helps me figure out things like which way his fur goes, do I want to change composition from the original image, etc., and basically allows me to destroy the first sheet of paper experimenting without any impact to the final image, lol.

I'd really appreciate any critiquing! :D

Referenced again from :iconkevlewis:, and his lovely little fox, 'Reynard II'. :cuddle:

It looks good for an initial sketch. I like how you moved the tail so it is in front of the fox and fully visible.

The only other deviation from the photo that is apparent at this stage is the eye. On your drawing, it is a bit larger than the photo. In the photo, he really has that beady eye look, whereas on your sketch he looks larger, almost more welcoming and relaxed. If you want to leave the eye larger and more open than on the photo, I would change the shape slightly, making it a tiny bit more rounded on the bottom edge. I hope that makes sense... If it doesn't, feel free to let me know and I'll try to explain it a little better or find a decent example of what I'm talking about.

Omg, so sorry for taking so long to reply! :faint: :ohmygod:

I see what you mean with his eye, I played around with it and it definitely does look much better now. I'd been having troubles with it for a long while, and have redrawn it countless times, often I think it just takes another person to see what's wrong! Now I just have to free myself long enough to get on with the next step! :P

:giggle: I had to go back to the deviation to remind myself what the critique was about. :XD:

I'm glad the critique helped. Sometimes I'll beat my head against a sketch for quite some time, know something isn't right, but find it impossible to figure out exactly what. An extra pair of eyes sometimes does make all the difference in the world.
